AEP sees high cost for coal ash compliance

Changing the definition of coal ash under federal environmental rules could cost customers of American Electric Power (AEP) nearly $4bn by 2020, according to a presentation from Chief Executive Michael Morris today. Morris, in a presentation at a Barclays investor event in New York, said that complying with one option in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposal to change how coal ash is regulated will cost the utility's customers an estimated $3.9bn by 2020. That option, which AEP prefers, would regulate coal ash under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and give states the ability to enforce federal performance standards.
