More GMO import approvals join the EU backlog

Applications for import and food/feed use approval of four Monsanto genetically modified cotton lines are set to join the growing backlog of GM crops awaiting final EU authorisation. EU member states in an appeal committee could not reach the majority vote needed to accept or reject the proposed approvals, repeating the “no opinion” outcome returned by the EU regulatory committee in an earlier vote. The applications are for: approval of insect-resistant Genuity Bollgard II (MON 15985) and renewing approval of existing food and feed additives produced from the line; renewal of glyphosate herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant Bollgard Roundup Ready (MON531xMON1445) and approval of cottonseed oil produced from the line; and renewal of the separate MON531 and MON1445 lines.
