A study on the compatibility between different ploidy cultivars of Hemerocallis and the genetic relationships among their hybrids.

The daylily (Hemerocallis spp.) is one of the most economically important ornamental plant species in commercial horticulture. This paper aims to provide a reference for the hybridization of Hemerocallis. Artificial hand-pollinations were made, where-after the seed-setting rate and seed number per fruit were investigated, using 21 modern Hemerocallis varieties, including diploids, triploids and tetraploids as well as two original species from China as parent material. The results showed that the level of compatibility was dissimilar in the various crossing combinations. The average seed-setting rate between diploids was 48.75%. There were significant segregations between diploids and tetraploid crossings and the average seed-setting rate was 11.34%. It was difficult to obtain seed from crosses between triploids and diploids and the seed-setting rate was as low as 1.56%.
