Before the term "sustainable development" ' was even coined, Chicago architect Bertrand Goldberg, a student of Mies van der Rohe, was designing a concrete city-within-a-city complex meant to curb the flow of people from downtown to the suburbs. In the 1960s, the unions feared this flow would lead to a decrease of city jobs, so Marina City offered an alternative to moving to the surrounding small towns. Goldberg designed the $36 million complex in 1959, and ground was broken the following year. And with that, the idea of living and working downtown eliminated the need for daily commuting and lessening an individual's carbon footprint, before anyone knew such a thing existed.
