The state of coenotic growths and resources of industrial algae in coastal waters of the minor Kuril islands chain.

In the coastal southern Kuril at depths of 0-25 m, there are 6 prevalent communities of brown algae, forming a belt whose distribution is defined by temperatures. As a result of the high rate of exploitation during 1987-1992, the stocks of Laminariajaponica and Cymathere japonica decreased rapidly and these algae, which had dominated, were displaced by Cystoseira crassipes in some areas. Since 1992 there has been no commercial harvesting of Laminaria for economic reasons; the stocks of brown algaehave stabilized at the 1990 level, but the restoration process occurred rather slowly. Since 1993, increases have been seen in the values of some parameters describing the state of the communities, notably the average biomass and plant density.
