THE PLATINUM VALLEY-JAPAN AND SOUTH AFRICA: Creating a step change in the further commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cell technologies

Japan and South Africa should collaborate and join hands to create a step change in the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy by accelerating the further commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell technologies. Japan needs to secure long term supplies of critical resources essential for its energy and other sectors of its economy. South Africa, on the other hand, needs to access investment, technology and know-how to drive sustainable industrialization through the beneficiation of its minerals and create jobs for millions of its citizens who are unemployed. Collaboration in the energy sector and in particular, the hydrogen fuel cells sector, seems appropriate in that both countries have adopted strategies to introduce hydrogen energy into their energy systems. They also face the triple challenge of energy supply shortages, energy security and the threat of climate change.
