An experiment was designed to determine the differences in growth and translocation between Oryza glaberrima and Oryza sativa. Two strains of O. glaberrima and two cultivars of O. sativa were grown in pots under flooded conditions. Growth was recorded from before heading, and at weekly intervals from heading individual plants were placed in an assimilation chamber for 1 h to assimilate 13C and then harvested 48 h later to determine the 13C ratio of each plant part. The heading period (days from thefirst panicle emergence to 50% heading) was longer for O. glaberrima than O. sativa. The life span of leaves at the same position was shorter for O. glaberrima than O. sativa. Dry matter accumulation in panicles ended earlier in ripening in O. glaberrima than in O. sativa. The 13C ratio of the panicles of O. glaberrima was greatest one week after heading, and that of O. sativa was greatest 3 or 4 weeks after heading.
