摘要

SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of seed storage proteins was used to determine the breeding system of legume (Fabaceae) species. Essential differences were observed between autogamous and allogamous species in protein variability, allowing the mode of pollination to be determined from protein PAGE patterns. Protein variability indices, expressed as the ratio of variable polypeptide number to total number of polypeptides observed, were established from electrophoregrams of 27 legume species, comprising Cicer arietinum, Medicago sativa, Melilotus officinalis, Onobrychis viciifolia, Phaseolus vulgaris and various Glycine, Lupinus, Pisum, Trifolium and Vicia species. Results were compared with the available information about the type ofpollination mechanism in legumes.
