Cold Rolling Industry in India - Present status and role in industrial development

Cold rolled products constitute the backbone of the manufacturing sector. The cold rolling industry as the major supplier of cold rolled, galvanized/colourcoated and electrical sheets with over 40 per cent market share has played a vital role in the rapid development of the auto sector, white goods industry, electrical equipment manufacturers and a wide range of other industries. The XIth Five Year Plan has set a growth target of 12 per cent per annum for the manufacturing to generate additional employment and the accelerated growth of GDP, which shall boost the demand for the cold rolled products. Besides, India as a low cost producer of steel and high ranking in the global competitiveness for the manufacturing sector has bright prospects to emerge as the global manufacturing hub for the production of machinery and equipment, spares and engineering goods as per the studies undertaken by the World Economic Forum and other analysts. The achievement of the objectives shall necessitate close collaboration and integrated planning by the steel/cold rolling industry and the manufacturing sector, which has lacked so far, to exploit the vast potential of the domestic and the foreign markets.
