Conflicting information about conflict of interest.

Conflict of interest occurs when circumstances create a risk that a person's professional judgment or actions regarding a primary interest will be unduly influenced by a secondary interest. This has recently become a focus of attention for physicians and physicians' groups as well as for the lay press and some politicians-particularly financial conflict of interest (FCOI), which occurs when monetary or material inducements have (or are perceived to have) the potential to influence impartial judgment. However, the paper by Aneja et al. (1) in this issue of the Journal presents findings that may prove surprising to some.
