Peabody's Willow lake coal mine in Illinois to shut permanently

In a surprise move, a Peabody Energy subsidiary said Tuesday it will permanently shut a southern Illinois underground coal mine idled by federal regulators for more than a week following a November 18 fatality. Big Ridge Inc., operator of the Willow Lake mine near Harrisburg in Saline County, said the mine has “failed to meet acceptable standards for safety, compliance and operating performance, and these ongoing issues make the operations unsustainable.”
