摘要

Tetragonal zirconia can be stabilized to room temperature with great metastability in that tetragonal (0 to monoclinic (m) martensitic transformation can be easily induced by stressing, or by subzero cooling. This t -> m martensitic transformation in zirconia is one of the most important toughening mechanisms for improving the strength and reliability of engineering ceramics. Although the metastability of t phase and the forward t m transformation have been widely appreciated, the metastability of the transformed m phase and the reverse m-t transformation have not been well recognised.
