Adverse mining conditions far worse than expected forced The American Coal Co. in early April to reluctantly issue layoff notices to all 800 employees at the Robert Murray-owned company's Galatia underground mine in Saline County, Ill.-the largest coal mine in the Midwestern state. The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices could result in possibly massive layoffs effective June 4. Or, "we may not have to lay off a single person," Murray Spokesperson Steven Cohen told Coal Age. At least, that was the hope of the company and state mining officials in early spring.
