A debate commonly heard among practicing nurses emphasizes the lack of understanding of the value of theory within nursing practice. This lack of understanding is commonly referred to as the theory-practice gap. In nursing education, the gap is a metaphor for the "dissonance between desired learning and demonstrated learning" (Gallagher, 2004, p. 264). According to Gallagher, the meaning conveyed by the phrase theory-practice gap is that practice and theory reside in different places and are disparate elements of a former or potential whole.The following discussion encompasses the authors' opinions of the theory-practice gap in contemporary nursing and an analysis of the connection between evidence-based practice (EBP) and the theory-practice gap.
