Techniques for the treatment of submucosal rectal tumors: the role of ESMRL.

In the current issue of this journal, Mashimo and colleagues describe the use of endoscopic submucosal resection with a liga-tion device (ESMRL) in the treatment of carcinoid tumors of the lower rectum.1 In this retrospective review, they report the results of 63 resections, with complete resection achieved in 95.2% of patients. This is the largest study of endoscopic therapy in the treatment of colorectal carcinoid and supports the growing evidence that these lesions, if properly selected, may be amenable to endoscopic intervention.
