In a dry sliding wear test using a pin-on-disk tester, we constructed a new in-situ observation system consisting of a CCD camera and a micro-flash, which we call the Live Observation System (LOS). This system enables the changes to a wear surface to be visualized after each cycle without detaching the test specimen. We compared the volume losses obtained via mass measurement and that obtained by measuring the width of the wear scar using the proposed system and the cross-sectional area obtained via surface profile meter. As a result, the change in the wear process after each cycle can be determined without stopping the wear test, and the volume loss can be estimated from the width of the wear scar obtained by the proposed system.
