Guest Editorial: Innovations Re-Drawing the Tertiary Education Landscape

Tertiary-education-seeking students are accustomed to learning by being in the classroom. The days of using chalk and blackboard for teaching are long gone. Transparencies, felt tip pens, overhead projectors, and screens have replaced the blackboards. Aesthetic PowerPoint slides and graphics prepared using computers and software, on-screen projection systems, video streaming, visualizers, and electronic blackboards are now common aids in teaching in the classroom. Nowadays, students come to the class with their laptops, tablets, and iPads, along with the hardcopy notebooks and writing accessories. They take notes directly using their information and communication technology (ICT) tools while the lecturer instructs in the classroom. Some students make use of the ubiquitous Internet to quickly know the meaning of new terminology that they come across in the classroom. Some of us take this ubiquitous help to clinics when we consult the doctors to grasp the complicated medical jargon! No wonder lecturers and medical doctors are on their toes nowadays! Over the years, the tertiary education institutions have upgraded respective ICT infrastructure, which enables sharing of lecture notes and teaching materials with students prior to the actual lecture in the classroom. Thanks to the progress of ICT systems, it is now feasible for the lecturer to conduct a web-based classroom discussion among the students, monitor assignments, and facilitate their ability to learn the concepts while interacting with peers. It is also possible to make available pre-recorded lecture videos digitally. In other words, the students receive support as and when needed, and connect with the lecture content at their own pace, space, and time.
