Over the last few years, sales of British berries have grown dramatically. From being a luxury product, associated with refined garden parties and tennis on the lawn, British berries-particularly strawberries - can be found in most supermarkets for large parts of the year. Driven at least in part by the growing awareness of the health benefits of eat-ingfresh fruit, 2003 proved a record year for the berry industry, with sales of strawberries up by 30 per cent to 30,719 tonnes and sales of raspberries up by a staggering 70 per cent to 2,322 tonnes. Together the two markets had a combined value of £116m.
