This spring I visited Heritage Museum & Gardens (formerly known as Heritage Plantation) in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and was enchanted by the huge variety of rhododendrons there. The grounds in late May and early June are adorned with a profusion of these beautiful plants in full flower. This impressive 76 acres was once the estate of Charles O. Dexter (1862-1943), who hybridized rhododendrons after retiring from the textile industry in 1921. Dexter eventually grew between five and ten thousand rhododendron seedlings yearly, many of which he sold or gave away. Such a prolific breeding program enabled him to develop a great many outstanding cultivars that continue to be widely admired and grown todav.
