The new EU VOC limits in 2010 require a VOC reduction from 400 g/l to 300 g/l for opaque architectural paints. In order to meet this requirement, it is not enough to just reduce the solvent content, as this will simply increase the viscosity of the paint beyond the ability to easily apply it. Options include using reactive diluents or reducing the molecular weight of a traditional resin. This, however, introduces two major problems — sagging from vertical surfaces and an unacceptable increase in drying time. This paper studies the performance of a new generation of hyperbranched resins (see also paper by Reuvers et al. reviewed in Waterborne and High Solids Coatings, March 2008).
