While gasoline and diesel have been produced for over a century, the formulation process was left in the hands of the individual refiner until the last 40 or so years. It was in the post-World War II period that refiners began to create formujlations to boost octane. For the most part, they were able to choose what components would be used, based on their own economic considerations.
