China Becomes Dominant Market For New Nuclear Plants

Any review of nuclear reactors under construction in 2009 must return again and again to the same point: China. Of the 54,615 megawatts of nuclear capacity under active construction at some point in 2009, nearly 43% were in China. More strikingly, 83% of the 14,836 MW of nuclear capacity on which construction commenced last year was in that country. Despite talk of a "global nuclear renaissance," what is evident is actually an Asian renaissance. And while South Korea is moving stridently forward, this Asian renaissance is largely focused in China, which has 21 nuclear plants under construction - more than the total number operating in either Canada or the UK - and is planning over 100 more.
