With Europe's prompt gas prices down by around half from late 2013, spark spreads — or a power plant's gross margin after fuel, carbon and variable operating costs are paid — are now close to zero at gas-fired power stations across the continent (WGI Jun.18'14). This is a great improvement from the negative values seen during most of 2012-13, but gas plants are still unable to recover fixed costs and generators continue to lose money and mothball assets.
