Cell lineage relationships in Drosophila melanogaster: The relationships of cuticular to internal tissues

Wehavestudiedcelllineageswithinseveralinternalstructuresandhavealsostudiedtherelationshipofsuchinternallineagestocuticularstructures.SuchobservationswerecarriedoutbycouplingvariouscuticularmarkerswithenzymeormorphologicalmarkersforinternaltissuesandusingtheseinbothsomaticrecombinationandMinute-gynandromorphmanipulations.Wehavefurtherexploredtherelationshipsamongcuticularandinternaltissuesbystudyingtheimpactofmutationsofthebithoraxgenecomplexoncuticularstructuresandtheinternalorganswhichunderlythem.Inbrief,weareunabletodemonstratetheexistenceofa€?compartmentsa€?intheinternaltissuesexamined;wehaveshownthatthecuticularandinternalstructuresexaminedinthisstudyare,inmostcases,notdemonstrablyrelatedinaclonalsense.Additionally,weshowthatchangesintheinternaltissuesexaminedhereinresponsetomutationsinthebithoraxcomplexareeithernotdetectedbyourmethodsofanalysisorareverydifferentfromthewell-characterizedresponsesoftheimaginaldiscderivatives.
