Japan Still Pays Top Dollar for LNG

Japan remains the priciest destination in Northeast Asia for LNG, paying an average of $16.22 per million Btu in May. While that was on a par with the $16.21/MMBtu average it paid over the first five months of 2013 and was flat on April, the price was 5.3% lower year-on-year. Volumes also fell. At 6.42 million tons, Japan's imports in May were 9% lower than a year earlier and 8.9% less than in April. That was largely because utilities used less gas for power generation: They consumed 4.21 million tons of LNG in May, 3.5% down on the month before.
