Chance, so often, can play a significant part in the direction of one's life. One such chance happening was when Martyn's parents, shopkeepers running at one time a greengrocers and at another time a fish and chip shop, decided to move from Darwen inLancashire to Burnley. At the time Martyn was 11 years old, very keen on playing football, and the ground where he played in Burnley was alongside a riding stables. A consequence was that he met Geoff Billington, a well-known jockey and show-jumper. They became friendly and soon afterwards, when 12 years old, Martyn started riding ponies.
