The late Spike Milligan once said that he didn't have a plan so nothing could go wrong. As Mushroom Growers we must plan every day to minute detail. This must be why it is rare to get to the end of the day without something going wrong! This column has been used, in varying degrees, to air views on our marketplace, discuss practical growing and harvesting issues and to brag openly about social lives to rival some celebrity 'A' Listers. I intend to cover a bit of each so I am desperately accepting every social invitation on offer this month in order to keep standards up. Luckily, we are in August, which is not only a great month for invitations, but also a great month for issues with growing, picking and selling. This week sees the culmination of a major refurbishment of our original site in the village. Nestling in pristine chippings with its glowing white covers, it could be mistaken for a new build. This type of reinvestment in the business is always high on our list of priorities and despite tightening margins we have decided to maintain the pace because it works for us. This refurbishment work has been lead by Alex who is on his second year on the work permit scheme. This is a good example of what we can achieve as a business through the availability of staff on this scheme. As an aside to this, his friend Vitaliy would be an example of how little can be achieved under this scheme as he decided to park our van on its side this morning. With no other vehicles involved on this bright sunny morning we can only imagine how he arrived in this position.
