TOUARTE TOW: Pulling power - All in a day's work - the Touareg V10 proved well up to the task of towing a Jumbo jet!

VOLKSWAGEN'S Touareg V10 TDI is already renowned for its amazing pulling power - over 300PS and 500 lb.ft torque is more enough to tow just about any normal load. No wonder that it won The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year awards for the full-size 4×4 category in 2004 and 2005. The handbook will tell you that it is rated to tow an unbraked trailer up to 750 kg and a braked load of up to 1654 kg, but it didn't see anywhere near enough. When Volkswagen's PR staff sat down with a calculator and did the sums, they reckoned that it was theoretically capable of towing in excess of 200 tonnes, assuming a dry surface and loading the Touareg's body and suspension well in excess of its rated limits to achieve the necessary traction. It certainly gave some scope for an exciting PR stunt and so they set out to find a suitable subject to tow.
