The Coen Co. (1510 Rollins Rd., Burlingame, CA 94010; Tel: 650/697-0440; Fax: 650/686-5655) has developed an ultra-low QLA NOx burner system that provides safe, reliable, and stable burner operation near the limits of flammability. Ultra-low NOx burner technology offers significant cost savings compared with such post-combustion treatment systems as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).The current Lowest Achievable Emissions Requirement (LAER) requires NOx emissions from boilers to be less than 9 ppm (at 3 percent O_2), with future regulations expected to cap NOx at less than 5 ppm. Meeting the single-digit NOx emissions requirements poses important technical, financial, and operational challenges to owners of steam-generating equipment.
