Treating a Dog with Unidentified Trauma

Iriage and treatment of patients with trauma are often difficult. The process is made even more arduous when the cause of the trauma is unknown, as in the case of Missy, a 2-year-old spayed shih tzu that was presented to the Auburn University Small Animal Teaching Hospital for anorexia, lethargy, and abdominal pain of approximately 12 hours' duration. In addition, a grade II/VI systolic heart murmur was reported on admittance and noted in the records obtained from the referring veterinarian. Primarily an indoor dog (allowed access to a fenced yard via a swinging pet door), Missy was current on vaccinations and heartworm preventatives. The owner reported no prior significant medical problems and no known history of trauma or toxin exposure.
