Learn something New: Business acumen is almost as important as medical expertise

Learn something new? At first glance, this hardly seems a groundbreaking strategy. After all, practicing veterinarians are required to complete a certain number of medically related continuing education (CE) hours each year to maintain their licenses.Limiting CE to those mandatory hours should be enough, shouldn't it? If you want a successful practice and a financially rewarding career, the answer to that question is probably no. In 1999, the KPMG Megastudy* study proved a correlation between business acumen and practitioner income. More importantly, the study concluded that "many veterinarians are not earning up to their potential because of a lack of financial expertise and/or because of the failure to use management practices proven to improve business performance."
