WORKING ON A BUDGET: Joseph Lewis finds some advice for young restorers

Stephen Batten learnt to drive tractors on two David Brown 1490 4WD models. These were standard gearbox models (rather than Hydrashift) and both were supplied by Cox's of Wellington, Somerset, in the mid-1980s. Later on, the farm went over to Massey Ferguson's range of 'thinking tractors.' When he left school he started working for Chris Bolt, a contractor from Tiverton, Devon, driving a New Holland 7740 and notching up 2,500 hours a year on umbilical slurry spreading. When it was time to change this tractor he requested - and received - a John Deere 6410 Premium 4WD with TLS front suspension. This began his association with vintage and classic green and yellow.
