PewterLive 2002

PewterLive, the annual design competition for second year students organised by the Worshipful Company of Pewterers in London, is going from strength to strength with the increasing popularity of pewter as a design material. This year a record seven colleges took part, with more entries than ever before and an increase in private sector sponsorship which has delighted the organisers. This year's designs reflect the growing interest in pewter and included more contemporary treatment of the traditional British pewter products, the tankard and the quaiche, as well as the application of pewter to more modern product ideas in tableware, desk accessories and trophies. The competition is sponsored by the British pewter manufacturing industry through their trade association the ABPC (Association of British Pewter Craftsmen) whose annual trade show was run alongside the PewterLive show at Pewterers' Hall from the 11th to the 13th June. Each college entering PewterLive has an ABPC sponsor who provides the opportunity for students to come into the real world of production and marketing, a benefit which is highly valued by both students and tutors. This is one of the few design competitions which actively links a student with a manufacturer to ensure that the design concepts are viable for manufacture. Each college is guided by the manufacturer to design items which fit in with the market sector and customer profile of the company and some new products have actually reached the market as a direct result of this competition.
