Bacteriological study of footrot in pigs: a preliminary note.

In an outbreak of bush foot (foot rot) on a semi-extensive farm in Caceres, Spain. in a herd 200 Iberian X Duroc-Jersey pigs (4-5 months old), 16 animals showed lesions in one or both hindlimbs. The pigs were free in a wooded pasture and were fed onacorns and feed. Swabs were taken from the interior of white line lesions from 11 affected pigs. Six strains of Dichelobacter nodosus were isolated and serotyped by slide microagglutination test. Five isolates were classified as serotype B (3 as B2, andone each as B1 and B3). 14 other anaerobic bacteria species were isolated including Prevotella (5), Peptostreptococcus (3), Fusobacterium (2), Porphyromonas (1), Bacteroides (1) and Eubacterium (1). All isolates were tested for drug resistance against 23 antimicrobial agents. D. nodosus and Prevotella melaninogenica were isolated from 6 and 5 affected pigs, respectively, and both species showed very high elastolytic activity. It is suggested that these 2 species are implicated in the aetiology of footrot in pigs.
