Understanding Requirements for Test Planning; They Are Our Foundation

Requirements frame the problem from which testers begin. But, too often we can breeze past the wording to get right into planning the test events. This can cause difficulties later in the design process when the team cannot agree on what the requirement really means. Most requirements contain ambiguities and/or minimal conditional details. While this might have been the intent of the resource sponsor, it does not help testers define and design the test space. Critical thinking is imperative to clarify the requirement, set objectives, and determine how the system will be tested and evaluated.
