Last quarter we presented a special issue exploring the consolidation of systems engineering with verification and validation (V&V) and other disciplines across the life cycle. I suggested at that time that our recent experiences have given us the outlines of a "new theory of test" encompassing several emerging best practices, including life cycle application of verification and validation, the use of model based systems engineering, incremental development (or Agile methods), and the application of formal methods to system test. We did not have room in that issue to cover all elements of the proposed new "theory of test," so in this issue, we complete our survey of the various techniques coming to the fore in complex system testing by publishing two additional technical articles.
