Prominent scientist Professor Genrikh N. Bere-stovsky became octogenarian on February 2, 2009. Hebelongs to the cohort of pioneers and founders of thebiophysical field shortly termed as "artificial mem-branes". This field was turbulently developing in past,and now one is consolidated into an acknowledged andfruitful branch of biophysics. Prof. G. Berestovsky andhis co-workers fulfilled a variety of experimental andtheoretical works to unveil physico-chemical featuresof liposomes and lipid bilayers, to characterize trans-port processes mediated by certain channel formers inthese biological systems, to reconstruct natural ionchannels in lipid bilayers, and to examine those in situ.These studies provided a deep insight into our knowl-edge on the structure and function of artificial and cel-lular membranes. The scientific findings of G.N. Bere-stovsky and his disciples and data of their colleagueswere summarized and generalized by G.N. Berestovskyand his co-author Prof. V.G. Ivkov in two monographsthat are well cited till now.
