Robots played an important role in the growth of Japanese manufacturing/assembly industry in the 1 980s and 1990s. Industrial robots worldwide numbered 720,000 in 1998 (IFR), 57.2% of which were operating in Japan. This was because the Japanese automobile industry used robots for spot and arc welding, then assembly. The electric home appliances industry used chip mounters widely.
