When the world became aware of environmental problems, many expected the problems would be solved early in the 21st century, once the world was aware of the problems. It soon became clear that trends in environmental problems will not change dramatically because the problems are rooted in the 20th century's socioeconomic structure and technologies. Global warming, acid rain, and air and water contamination problems will continue with no rosy prospects for a solution in the 20th century technology. These environmental problems have been created by active application of the Western sense of value system on the cosmos. When Descartes preached his basic concept of the cosmos as infinite extension, modem society began.
