Transcallosal Surgery for Lateral and Third Ventricular Tumors

Access to the lateral and third ventricles through the corpus callosum can provide a valuable surgical tool for the removal of tumors in this region. Successful tran-scallosal resection of ventricular tumors requires careful intraoperative techniques to minimize morbidity and maximize the chances for total tumor removal. This report illustrates some general principles and surgical techniques that can be useful for lesions of the lateral and third ventricles. Although partial sectioning of the corpus callosum generally does not produce significant neurological deficits, additional extracallosal injury by the tumor or surgeon can result in unsatisfactory neurological recovery. Meticulous attention to preoperative evaluation, intraoperative technical details, and postoperative care can yield gratifying results.
