摘要

In recent years, increasing numbers of paper mills have experienced financial losses due to offensive odors in their paper products. Many of these odors are due to the presence of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which include acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. These acids create odors that smell like vinegar, Swiss cheese, and rancid butter, respectively. While they can be introduced into a mill system from external sources such as furnish and additives, VFAs often accumulate in mill systems as a result of anaerobic bacterial growth.
