It used to be that oscilloscopes were bulky instruments with small, dim screens. You had to roll them around on a cart, and to see anything, you often had to jury-rig some kind of shade over that dim screen. Recording measurements was even more cumbersome. For that, you had to have a special Polaroid camera that bolted over the screen.
