Preliminary study on the virus transmitted by greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) in Poland.

In the fall of 2003 and 2004, tomato plants in Poland exhibited severe stunting, reduction in size and necrosis of the leaves. The pathogen was poorly transmitted mechanically but was very easily transferred by a whitefly vector (T. vaporariorum). Electron microscope observation of sap from infected plants showed spherical virus particles that are 23-25 nm. Ultrastructural studies of the infected tomato leaves showed the occurrence of crystalline aggregates containing spherical virus particles.
