Outcome of SAPA's application for increases in import duties on chicken, chicken cuts and chicken offal

The Southern African Poultry Association (SAPA), applied to the International Trade Commission of South Africa (Itac) for an increase in the rates of duty on various imported chicken products including a new duty on imported chicken offal. While Amieobjected to the proposed duty changes we have to, from the outset, state that: the majority of our members actually purchase and have strong business relationships with many of the local poultry producers: our members recognise and have empathy for the high capital outlay to establish local poultry infrastructures; our members recognize the value and importance of a healthy local poultry industry; However, to satisfy consumer demand the market requires the right product at an affordable price. The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters' (Amie) objection to SAPA'S application was successful in persuading Itac not to increase duties on imported whole chicken and bone-in chicken cuts.
