Senate Committee Approves Measure To Block Preemption of State Chemical Laws

The Senate Appropriations Committee March 22 approved a measure (S.965)that would prevent the Department of Homeland Security from preempting state chemical security laws that are more stringent than federal law.The committee gave voice-vote approval to a supplemental appropriations bill for fiscal 2007 that included language drafted by Sen.Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.)that would block a provision in a proposed rule issued in December 2006 by the Department of Homeland Security.
