Despite the absence of regulations,signs point to an emerging informal carbon market in the US.In response,more companies are pushing the limits of this nascent frontier,hoping to realize an early adopter advantage by participating in voluntary initiatives.Several large corporations announced last month they would voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions by participating in the US Environmental Protection Agency's "Climate Leaders" program,an industry/government partnership.Of the 54 participating companies,20 have set formal goals that together will prevent the emission of 7.5-mil mt of carbon equivalent per year,an amount equal to the emissions of five million cars,according to EPA.
