BHP Billiton,an active player in deep- and ultra-deep waters of the US Gulf of Mexico,has now turned an eye toward geologically deep but shallower-water plays nearer the US coastline.The Australian major said Mar 31 it plans to spud its first well on the so-called deep-Gulf Continental Shelf by year-end."We've amassed some Shelf acreage over the last couple of lease sales" for blocks in both the western and central Gulf of Mexico,BHP spokesman Patrick Cassidy told Platts,but could not confirm which block will be drilled.
