Two US senators have renewed calls to reimpose a Superfund tax on petroleum and chemicals feedstocks in the wake of a General Accounting Office analysis indicating a 35% decline since 1993 in congressional appropriations for the cleanup program.According to the GAO analysis,released Feb 19 by the senators,appropriations,adjusted for inflation,have fallen from just over US1.9-bil in 1993 to US1.2-bil in 2004.
