Setaqua 6250: a Novel Binder for Waterborne Trim Paints with Improved Application Properties

The limited open time of waterborne trim paints is still a critical issue and is not up to the performance of conventional solvent borne paints. As a consequence extensive R&D efforts have led to the development of a novel binder Setaqua 6250 that can be used in very low VOC (30 g/l) waterborne trim paints with good application proper-ties, especially improved open time. The influence of different paint ingredients on open time, gloss, hardness and durability are discussed. Semi gloss and matt formulations based of the Setaqua 6250 are also developed and results are discussed.In 2010, the second phase of the European legislation on VOC emissions was implemented. For solvent borne trim paints the amount of VOC permitted was limited to 300 grams/liter, for waterborne trim paints the VOC limit is 130 grams/liter /including water). Furthermore a number of EU member states, such as the Netherlands have or will in near future ban the use of solvent-borne paints for interior application.
