Work on revising the Large Yacht Code, VV the de facto international standard for the design and operation of superyachts and megayachts, has been underway for some six months at the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Recently, the MCA has indicated that the work is progressing more slowly than had been anticipated at the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), and Claude Hamilton, head of the code vessel safety branch at the MCA has said the revised version of the Code is unlikely to be completed until autumn 2003. The Large Yacht Code - which applies to superyachts whether power or sail, constructed from steel, aluminium, wood or fibre-reinforced plastics of 24m length overall or more - has been in operation now for five to six years, and has been widely adopted by all sectors of the industry as the standard for safety, whereby the Code provides equivalent standards in order to meet IMO regulations - such as Load Line and SOLAS. The review is being implemented in order to take account of changes in modern superyacht design and construction.
